Munich-Zurich: Swiss railways removes trains on the problem route from the timetable
Munich – The promise at the launch in December 2021 was tempting: travel from Munich to Zurich (or vice versa) in three and a half hours without changing trains. In ultra-modern Eurocity tilting trains, dining car and children’s compartment included.
The connection should bring the two metropolises even closer together and offer tough competition for both car journeys and flights. This was made possible by the electrification of the German section between Munich and Lindau.
Munich-Zurich: Delays and disruptions on a problematic route
But the reality is different: Two thirds of all trains on this connection are delayed from the start. It is often half an hour if the train is longer. The reasons: A long route with only one lane, train crossings in the Allgäu, construction sites and disruptions in the tilting technology of the trains, as a spokeswoman for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) told the “Luzerner Zeitung”.
If they then arrive in Switzerland with just a little delay, they are slowed down further by other trains, which they have to follow behind. So the delay increases.
The SBB are already going so far as to remove the trains on this route from the timetable on some sections within Switzerland because they are so unreliable.
Munich-Zurich: Passengers can hope six times a day
However, this is not relevant for passengers who want to travel from Munich to Zurich and back: the train travels the route back and forth six times a day. Only that you really arrive at your destination in the announced time is rather unlikely.
