Maia Sandu hopes that the Republic of Moldova will join the EU by 2030 – Mures News, Targu Mures News
The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, elected in 2020 on a pro-European and anti-corruption platform, expressed her hope that the country will join the European Union before 2030.
“My wishes are very ambitious,” Sandu said in statements broadcast on the public television station Moldova-1. “I think they must become members of the European Union by the end of this decade.”
The EU accepted the accession candidacy of the Republic of Moldova in June, when it granted the same status to Ukraine. The decision was a diplomatic triumph for Maia Sandu, who leads one of the most countries in Europe facing many economic problems, Reuters notes.
Joining the EU involves a long and complex process of aligning legislation with European law, but Dumitru Alaiba, the new economy minister, told Reuters this month that he was drawing up a long-term reform plan and would cut red tape to lay the foundations for a . business-friendly economies and to accelerate EU accession. He said his priorities would include deregulating the economy and overhauling a burdensome tax system that has discouraged investors, allowed corruption to spread and reduced revenue.
Moldova is struggling to reduce its dependence on Russian gas as it faces blackouts caused in part by Moscow’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. It also faces protests over rising inflation.
