accommodation for street children in the 2nd arrondissement extended by one week
The 34 children will be welcomed for another week in a gymnasium in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon.
They will sleep in the shelter for another week. Since the start of the holidays, 34 street children in the Lyon metropolitan area have been welcomed in a gymnasium in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon. This provision was to end on Tuesday. Finally, on Monday, the families learned that they could stay another week.
“It is not an entirely satisfactory solution”
The city of Lyon took this decision, considering that the prefecture had not met its expectations by not offering any accommodation solution to these twelve families. The 54 people, including 34 children, who were to find themselves on the street on Tuesday, can therefore breathe for a few more days. On the side of the association, the proposed solution, although appreciated, is not sufficient.
It asks the State to act and respect the law. “It is not an entirely satisfactory solution, explains Raphaël Vulliez, member of the collective “Never without a roof” at BFM Lyon. We, what we expected, is that the State takes its responsibilities and assumes its missions of shelter and that the families incorporate the emergency accommodation system.”
A promise “not kept”
And to add: “So, there, it is an extension until January 15 and it is a support by the city of Lyon as was the case during the holidays. And obviously that the commitment which was taken by the Minister Delegate for Housing is not required.”
The Rhône prefecture ensures that it is working on the opening of new emergency accommodation sites in the Rhône, in particular by mobilizing the heritage of the State. According to information from BFM Lyon, the former military hospital in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement is on the right list to welcome people in need in the coming days.
