Prague traditionally rewards all children born on New Year’s Day to mothers with permanent residence in the capital with 15,000 crowns. According to the municipality, the tradition of presenting a gift to the first citizen of Prague probably originated in the 1960s under Mayor Ludvík Černý.
But until the year 2000, I only receive a gift for the first baby. The gift ranged from 5,000 to 15,000 crowns and was handed over to the mayor in the form of passbooks in the child’s name while still in the maternity hospital.
Since 2001, all children born on New Year’s Day have received a gift. Until 2005, the donation was 10,000 crowns, in subsequent years it was 15,000 crowns. Last year’s first child was also born at the Mother and Child Care Institute in Podolí. It was a boy, born at 01:06.
