The concert under the direction of conductor Franz Welser-Möst started at the end of the morning in the Wiener Musikverein. The newspaper Kurier reports that the activists were in the concert hall and were identified at the beginning of the concert. They were later caught by plainclothes officers.
According to the Austrian media, their arrest showed that the activists had bonded. It is not known exactly what they intended. The action has been claimed by the Austrian branch of Letzte Generation (Last Generation). He says that the activists wanted to hold up a banner during the concert.
The police already took into account possible disruptions to the New Year’s concert, which was held in a full house for the first time since the corona pandemic. Climate activists made the news last year by, among other things, beating roads and smearing works of art.
