Siena, prisoners prepare and serve New Year’s lunch to the poor
I’m serving New Year’s lunch to the poor. It happens in Siena.
Tomorrow, Sunday 1 January 2023, they will be detained in the Santo Spirito prison in Siena to prepare and serve meals at the canteen of the diocesan Caritas of San Girolamo. The initiative called “Adoption to dish”: was deliberately strongly promoted by Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice, archbishop of Siena Colle Di Val D’Elsa- Montalcino, and by Marco Santoro, commander of the penitentiary police of the prison, thanks to the direction of the chaplain of the prison, Don Carmelo Lo Cicero. The parishes of S. Isidoro in Taverne and S. Ansano in Dofana also mobilized for this real event and raised the funds for the purchase of raw materials.
The meals will be prepared in the prison by a real “kitchen team” for 70 people with a menu based on rice, chicken and soup. There will be three prisoners who will be able to go out to serve at the table together with the volunteers coordinated by Sister Nevia.
“An idea born at Christmas – explains Don Carmelo Lo Cicero – It was precisely the people who asked to be able to cook for the guests of the Caritas canteen on New Year’s Day as a sign of hope and sharing with many people who are in difficulty The menu was also chosen to respect the habits of the many Pakistanis who eat at Sister Nevia’s canteen.Special thanks to the surveillance magistrate, Maria Pia Savino – concludes Don Lo Cicero – for allowing the prisoners to leave prison for this truly meritorious, and to Maria Josè Massafra, educator of the prison, and to the director Santina Savoca. A unique moment that will see the undersigned together with the cardinal waiting at the tables”.
