“This is how you go safely from old to new”: Antwerp police gives tips for a carefree party night (Antwerp)
“A safe old to new without aggression, violence or other disturbances. That is the wish of the Antwerp police zone and, by extension, all other insurance companies that are active during the party night,” says police spokesperson Wouter Bruyns. “A lot of that is in your own hands.”
Firework
First of all, it is forbidden to carry firecrackers in your pocket and to use them. The police will check for this during the party night. “Using it is not without risk. Moreover, it is very disturbing for bystanders, local residents and animals,” says Bruyns.

If the police catch you in possession of using it, you can prove a GAS fine, which can cost up to 350 euros. The police will always confiscate the fireworks and store them safely with a view to their professional destruction. Those costs are also passed on. “So choose to watch the fireworks on the Scheldt if you want to see fireworks.”
Drink and drive
“Despite the fact that New Year’s Eve is traditionally very busy for the police, every driver in our city is at risk of being subjected to a check,” the police said.
Drivers driving under the influence of drugs can see their license revoked for a minimum of 15 days. Those who blow positively also risk an immediate driving ban. We blow an A of ‘present’, the driver’s license is retained. Even if you get behind the wheel after using laughing gas, you are driving under the influence.
Be a slim reveler and make good agreements about who drinks and who doesn’t. Isn’t it working? Then always choose a safe alternative such as a taxi. Never drive with someone who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs and certainly do not lend your car to someone who is driving under the influence of not having a driver’s license.
fatigue
Was it late or rather early? Whatever it is, only get behind the wheel when you are still fresh. “If you feel a dip along the way, even put yourself aside for a moment of rest. Never use stimulants to stay awake. This way you ensure that you and your passengers get home safely,” says Bruyns.
Door locked
Do you do elders parties? Good idea! But always check that the doors are properly closed and that all windows are completely closed. Make it difficult for burglars and double ladders near your home or other things that allow you to enter a home with a simple climb. Maybe your neighbors can let you know that you won’t be there on New Year’s Eve. Are you expecting someone home late? Never leave a key under the mat, under a flower box or any other obvious hiding place.
Out together, home together
If you go out with a group, it is good to observe each other. “Not only on each other’s things, but also that you don’t lose each other in perhaps lesser-known parts of the city,” the police recommend. “Make sure your mobile phone is always sufficient so that you can call each other if necessary if things don’t go as you hoped. Never meet someone you don’t know and therefore always the waterfront at the city harbor and the Scheldt.”
