The Quebec Ministry of Public Security (MSP) has confirmed that Nicous D’André Spring was illegally detained, when he should have been released on December 23 following an investigation into his release by videoconference since the ‘Montreal Detention Facility – called Bordeaux Prison.
Furthermore, the MSP
also said that two other detainees who were released that day were being held illegally, as they should have been released the same day. They were released on December 24.That afternoon, however, while D’André Spring was still detained for reasons still unknown, he was involved in a physical procedure during which he lost consciousness.
He was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 25.
A corrections officer was temporarily relieved of his duties following a preliminary analysis of the incident.
In a statement, the Ministry of Public Security indicates that it will conduct an administrative investigation into the events that took place on Christmas Eve, including in particular illegal detention

D’André Spring’s family has yet to come forward publicly. A candlelight vigil is planned in his honor on Friday at Benny Park in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district.

On December 20, Nicous D’Andre Spring was charged with assault on a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and criminal harassment. In March 2021, he was charged with breaching a condition of a release order.
