Maia Sandu reacted on social media after the Russian army launched a barrage of rockets on Ukraine on Thursday morning.
“While the whole world is enjoying the joy of the winter holidays, Russia continues to bring destruction and death to Ukraine. This morning, Russian military forces launched a new series of missile attacks on Ukraine – more than 100 missiles, according to early estimates. Explosions occurred in residential areas of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv and other cities, destroying buildings and cars parked nearby. The attacks continue even at this moment, endangering the lives of people in the localities of the neighboring country. We vehemently condemn these barbaric, unprovoked actions aimed at bringing destruction and death. The bombing of towns with peaceful people and the destruction of the infrastructure that ensures their basic living conditions, in the dead of winter, is a crime that must not go unpunished.” wrote the president of the Republic of Moldova on his Facebook page.
The suspended activity of the Moldovan-Ukrainian crossing points
The Russian attacks caused the suspension of the activity of the Moldovan-Ukrainian crossing points in the first part of Thursday. Around 15 institutions located in the northern part of the Republic of Moldova were closed for several tens of minutes for travelers.
“The Border Police informs about the suspension of the work schedule at all border crossing points on the Moldovan-Ukrainian sector in the north of the country, for security reasons. The competent Ukrainian authorities do not allow the crossing of the state border in the context of the risks of an air attack by the Russian Federation on Ukraine. We recommend traffic participants to choose, in time, other crossing points in the vicinity or, as far as possible, to postpone their journeys in Ukraine until the situation improves”, the border police announced.
The Ministry of Defense denies it
And the representatives of the Ministry of Defense wanted to come up with clarifications and refute the information from the online environment, according to which the missile arrived on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
“In relation to the information that appeared regarding a missile that would have headed in the direction of the Republic of Moldova, as a result of the bombings in Ukraine this morning, the following is communicated: The information is not confirmed by the airspace monitoring systems of our countries . “, specialists of the institution scored.
Several Russian missiles also arrived on the territory of the Republic of Moldova
Earlier this month, a missile was detected in the north of the neighboring countries by border police, who stepped up checks, in the context of large-scale attacks by the Russian army in Ukraine.
And in the morning of October 31, a missile of the Russian army and shot down by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft system fell on the territory of the town of Naslavcea, in Ocnița district. Also in October, three missiles flew over the airspace of the Republic of Moldova. The same thing happened in the context of Russian air attacks on several cities in Ukraine. Later, the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Chisinau, Oleg Vasnetsov, was urgently summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. “The violation of our national airspace is completely unacceptable“, the MAEIE employees informed then.
