The two teams already met on October 1, when the clash between the two teams ended with a 78-61 victory in Szombathely. The home team had a great performance and finished with a 12-1 record for the first time of the season, while the visitors were 2-11.
Playing with Kovács’ basket, Simon secured the Honvéd’s first point with a triple. Keller scored a penalty, Tanoh Dez made a brave break-in and made a jump shot, and he also received a hit, but did not score the penalty. Tiby didn’t make a mistake from the line, Brown dodged a ball from Simon and made a sack, Demeter and Mijovics’ triples gave the visiting team a four-point lead (7-11). Kovács was again effective from close range, to which Tanoh Dez answers. Perl got on the scoreboard with two penalties, Tanoh Dez sunk the fourth guest three-pointer in the quarter, Cowels threw the first homer from the center on the other side, Sherman and Perl exchanged baskets (16-18). Demeter worked well in the paint, with Perl’s break-in, he brought Falcó closer, and then reversed the result with his 2+1. Mijovics threw a tempo, and the last minute of the quarter started with Sherman’s 2+1 action, after which Barac scored his first points. The quarter ended with Völgyi’s penalty, which the Honvéd won with 3 points. 23-26
Barac came in from the first home attack of the second quarter, Falco took the lead again with Perl’s penalty. Peringer bagged Demeter’s assist, Kovács converted Perl’s pass for two points, and then Mijovics scored two penalties (29-30). Cowells hit his second treble. in addition, he scored 4 points with a foul, and then scored another three, as Szabolcs Baksa requested, as the score was 13-4 in the quarter (36-30). After the stoppage of play, he brought it closer by one, but Barac restored the difference with penalties. After Tiby’s close shot, he also scored a triple, and Pot scored a penalty, so the Budapest team asked again (44-32). Völgyi punished Pot’s foul with only 1 point, while Brown did not make any mistakes. With Mijovics’ triple, the guests got to 10, but Keller answered immediately. The foreign player of the Honvéd finished 1/2 from the line, but Simon broke through the domestic defense nicely with a jumper. Barac went through the guest’s defense, and Simon’s triple ended the quarter and the half, so Falco could go to the break with an 8-point advantage. 50-42
Perl started the second half with 2+1, Demeter’s assist was used by Mijovics. Cowells shot a three-pointer from the middle – it was already his fourth in the game -, but Tanoh Dez threw it back, and then continued a break-in. Peringer ended the quick start from Pot’s layup, Barac and Perl calmed down the mood with two quick baskets, Szabolcs Baksa called for a timeout (62-51). Sherman threw a good pace, and with his breakthrough, the difference between the two teams was again only 7 points. The American had two penalties to bring his team even closer, but missed them, but Barac didn’t do the favor at the other end. Kovács responded to Völgyi’s points scored from the paint with a three-pointer, Mijovics’ pace and Barac’s penalty left the score at 10. The home team’s 24 continued their penalty streak, then made a close shot, Sherman’s 3+1 ended the quarter, giving them a 10-point advantage. Falco could wait for the final stage. 73-63
The last quarter started with Perl’s jump shot, and with Pot’s triple the difference was 15, Völgyi’s quick basket was very much needed by the guests. Tanoh Dez flashed again, and Milos Konakov asked for time. Perl played himself clean for a mid-range shot, Tiby was completely alone under the backboard, Tanoh Dez’s sold ball was used by Perl with a 2+1 action (85-67). Demeter’s basket was answered by Tiby, apparently the Honvéd was a bit tired in the last quarter as usual, so the last 5 minutes did not promise much excitement, as Keller’s sack increased the home advantage to 20 (89-69). With Mijovics’ five points, the Honvéd was a bit closed, but Pot’s points 3 minutes before the end completely closed the questions. Falco is already soaring and stands at 13-1, and Honvéd is eliminated for the sixth time in a row. 96-80 – reported by
