It was around 6 a.m. on Christmas morning that a 26-year-old man from Vlissingen was damaged with multiple gunshot wounds by a car at the Melkmarkt, on the corner of the Korte Nieuwstraat in Antwerp. Another 20-year-old Dutchman stepped out of the car with Dutch number plates, who stayed with the victim. He also comes from Vlissingen. Both men were detained by police for questioning.
The victim was taken to ZNA Stuivenberg in life-threatening condition. The Antwerp park announced on Monday that the man is no longer in mortal danger. “His condition is stable,” says spokeswoman Lieselotte Claessens. “The 20-year-old man who was arrested by the victim was brought before the investigating judge this afternoon. He was allowed to obtain.”
Mystery
The circumstances and the place where the shooting developed remain a mystery for now. “It is clear that the victim was not shot at the Melkmarkt,” said the spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office on Sunday. An investigating judge was advanced for attempted manslaughter. The police set up a perimeter in various places in the city for trace investigation.
The car that was involved in the facts on the Melkmarkt was also found that same morning in a canal next to the highway in the Dutch town of Middelburg (Zeeland). The vehicle was completely emptied, the driver could not be found on site. “The dumped car was towed for trace investigation. The driver of it is being traced,” says the public prosecutor’s office.

The victim was probably present at the Latin Rituals event, which was organized by Zeeuwen in dance club Ikon at the Straatsburgdok. Many Vlissingers had come to see it. The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office does not wish to comment further. “The investigation is ramping up,” says Claessens.
