RTL Today – Luxembourg: More than 20% of fatal accidents are due to drunk driving
In this recent Statec study, we learn that 31% of drivers who tested positive for alcohol were not alone in the car.
It shouldn’t be necessary to repeat that drunk driving kills, and yet Statec wanted to get the message across again just before the holidays through some very interesting figures. For example, alcohol was involved in a tenth of all crashes over the past 5 years, with men being more often involved than women.
21% of fatal accidents between 2017 and 2021 were due to drunk driving. Collisions between vehicles were the most numerous in this case, followed by trips off the road or collisions with a tree, another obstacle or a car parked along the road.
Accidents caused by drink driving are most often at night, as well as during the summer period and at the end of the year. The main cause of these accidents involving a drunk driver was excessive speed in 41% of cases. The same is true for people who had not consumed alcohol, but this rate drops to only 21%.
Heavy alcohol consumption was the main cause of accidents among 25-44 year olds, followed closely by the youngest 18-24 year olds.
