Thousands of people expanded their knowledge in autumn at the Senior University in Debrecen
Debrecen – The popularity of the performances of the series, which is already in its sixth season, remains unchanged among interested people, mainly of the retired age group.
About a thousand people took part in the lecture series of the fall semester of the Senior University, which ended on Friday with Professor Péter Nagy’s lecture entitled Sulfur compounds in his oncology. The events were part of the third mission of the University of Debrecen and provided information on scientific innovations for the older age group, thereby supporting lifelong learning.

The series, which is now in its sixth season, remains popular among interested people, mainly of the retired age group.
And although the funding for the application has ceased in the meantime, the continuation of the informative lecture series is still ensured from the university’s own resources.
– The transfer of knowledge is our mission, which is independent of age groups, so it cannot be exhausted in the training of students. All the knowledge that accumulates as a result of the research carried out in the institution deserves to be known more widely, one of the tools for this is the special training program of the Senior University, the University of Debrecen (DE), said the hirek.unideb.hu portal László Pósán, professor of the Institute of History of the DE BTK.
The professional head of the Senior University emphasized: the theme of the lectures held in the autumn half of the 2022/23 academic year allowed the participants to be informed about, among other things, current events in the life of the city, world events, health topics and historical anniversaries such as Golden bull or the Petőfi commemorative year.
Thus, during the semester, he gave a presentation on Development on a Historical Scale in Debrecen. Economy, innovation – what no one dared to think about 30 years ago László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen County Right, on the history and effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war, retired Major General János Isaszegi.
– As the number one knowledge base of the region’s higher education institution, our priority task is to support lifelong learning, for the older age group, these occasions provide not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the possibility of a social life – said Levente Takács.
The lecturer of BTK emphasized that although the task of organizing the lectures was undertaken by the Board of Education and the faculty, it is a priority that the interested parties can meet the most outstanding segments of the scientific and research work taking place here by presenting the university as a whole.
At the last event of the semester, Professor Péter Nagy, director of the DE Chemistry Coordination Institute and chairman of the Scientific and Social Advisory Board of the István Gróf Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen, gave a lecture entitled Sulfur compounds in oncology – therapeutic options beyond unpleasant odors.
The organization of the next semester’s programs has already begun, and the students of the Senior University are expected to return to school in March 2023.
