Participatory budget in Lyon: the revegetation of Place Bellecour wins the vote
The mayor of Lyons, Gregory Doucetand his assistant delegate for local democracy, Chloe Vidalrevealed the results of first participatory budget of the City of Lyon. The inhabitants, workers and students of Lyon had to choose from 217 projects by offering themselves on the Oyé platform between November 7 and December 4.
Nearly 42,000 votes were cast and over 6,000 people logged in to support their favorite projects. “This first participatory budget is a great success. The people of Lyon played the game to participate in the transformation of the city”believes Grégory Doucet.

In the end, 110 projects spread over all the boroughs were selected and will share a budget of 12.5 million euros, or 24 euros per inhabitant. Shaded rest areas, more access to water with more fountains and of course more vegetation are the main expectations of the inhabitants.
“The Place Bellecour greening project has a special flavor because it is the one that received the most votes with 1,514 votes. A budget of 1.5 million euros will be granted to this project which should be implemented place on a transitional mode because we are working in parallel on the appeasement project of the Presqu’île”explains the mayor.
Four other projects adapted from an “all-city” dimension. These include the installation of rainwater collectors in schools, secure bike boxwildlife roosts in green spaces and municipal buildings, as well as a climbing wall to encourage the practice of this sport.
A second participatory budget in Lyon in 2024
In the different boroughs, a wide variety of projects will be carried out over the two years:
- a virtual tour of the mysterious underground network of fishbones in the 1uh,
- toilets on Place des Archives in the 2e,
- solidarity lockers for the homeless in the 3e,
- a large fresco on the wall of the Croix-Rousse cemetery,
- a new place of reception for associations at the Parc de la Visitation in the 5e,
- a game of bowls places Europe in the 6e,
- hammock structures and a chess table at Parc Blandan in the 7e,
- the renovation of the Saint-Hippolyte sports ground in Monplaisir in the 8e,
- a Duchere bread oven…
“After an evaluation and feedback phase on the projects implemented, a second sequence, also endowed with 12.5 million euros, will be carried out in 2024”announces Chloë Vidal.
