More and more people are being run over sleeping on the road in Japan
The number of people killed in hit-and-run accidents in Japan is rapidly increasing, in which people end up lying in the middle of the road after a night of fun – the British newspaper The Guardian reported on Wednesday.
With the lifting of restrictions due to the coronavirus epidemic, more and more people are attracted to nightlife in Tokyo, for example, and the number of sleeping people trampled to death on the road has also increased.
Based on the police report, the number of such deaths has doubled compared to a year ago. It is feared that in the next two weeks, during the holidays, the number of deaths will continue to increase, because of the lack of drinking due to the pandemic, which is why the Bonenkai evenings, where office workers gather after work, are now being tried to make up for it.
Due to the sudden increase in the number of fatal accidents, the police asked the residents to consume less alcohol during the end-of-the-year “Bonenkai season”.
Of the ten people who were run over to death in Tokyo this year, all of them had been drinking, lay down on the road in front of them and were hit, the police said.
With the help of a comedian duo, the ministry released a public informational film that draws attention to the traffic danger of excessive alcohol consumption and provides the public with traffic safety advice. The film can be seen in 60,000 taxis until New Year’s Eve, if the passenger watches the monitor installed, but it will also be shown in other places. In addition, the outsider asks passenger and freight transport companies to warn their drivers: to drive more slowly at night and to always have their headlights on.
Their bonenkas are literally anniversary parties where people get together and “let loose” after long hours at the office.
But in other parts of the country besides Tokyo, more and more drunks are sleeping on the road, especially on weekends and at the end of the year, when people drink more.
In 2020, Okinawan police recorded more than seven thousand such cases, which some attribute to the favorable weather in the southern part of the island, as well as a strong local liquor.
