Freedom to move, speak and make noise
Milan, 13 Dec. Schubert, Schumann and Brahms resound at the Musikverein in Vienna, famous throughout the world for hosting the New Year’s concert, for a series of special performances.
The concerts called “Souvenir”, I recall, were conceived and studied for people suffering from neuro-cognitive disorders such as dementia.
βIt’s really tailored to the special needs of people with dementia β explains Stephan Pauly, director of the concert hall β which means you can move around during the concert. There isn’t a rigid protocol, you can come and go whenever you want, you can have an emotional reaction, you can talk or make noise, without disturbing anyone. You can go to the bathroom whenever you want.”
A relaxed environment and a short duration, about an hour, to put the audience at ease and allow them to enjoy the beauty of the music to which, according to the experts, one remains very receptive even if other intellectual functions are lost.
