Election 2022 | Three representatives of the SPD can play a big role in the creation of the minority Prague council
After 80 days since the elections, the capital is now close to electing a new city council headed by the mayor.
TOGETHER last week asked for the support of the minority council, while the YES movement it has been offering its own almost since the election. can thus be expected that both parties will agree on today’s meeting.

Such a minority council would rely only on a narrow majority of 33 of the 65 seats in the council. “It will be very difficult for some representatives in the coalition to tame themselves TOGETHER. After all, this is a coalition of three political parties, there were a number of politicians with their own heads for the incoming candidates,” says political scientist Lukáš Jelínek, citing as an example the senator and representative Hana Kordová Marvanová now independent for ODS.
“All kinds of political projects have failed in the past due to her, let’s say, soloist politics. Even Špidl’s government had problems with it when it was formed in 2002, and at that time Marvanová, as the president of the Union of Freedom, refused to support it. For her, the values she subscribes to are more important than any political agreement. We can find more such politicians on the side of the TOGETHER coalition, when loyalty and discipline can be expected from the ANO movement,” explains Jejallínek.
It worked once before
Whereas the Both Pirates and Prague refused to support the minority option and even the STAN club is not inclined to cooperate with ANO, they gain the possible votes of three representatives of the coalition SPDTrikolora, Hnúti PES and independents together for Prague.
Although the SLOT coalition did not officially ask for support, but according to Jelínek, this does not necessarily mean that there are no unofficial meetings and negotiations taking place.
The leader of the coalition around the SPD, Milan Urban, did not confirm that his club will vote for the minority council in cooperation with ANO and SPOLU, but they do not hide their antipathy towards the Pirates and Prague itself.
The SPD has always defined itself critically against the Pirates and Prague itself.

“Of course, we want the new council, made up of the current representatives, to function. The SPD has also always defined itself critically against the Pirates and Prague itself, who are responsible for the current morass in the city’s administration and its decline in all areas. But the declaration of minority councils is mainly a matter of agreement TOGETHER and YES. However, as is widely known, this is again only a time-limited solution. So, unfortunately for the people of Prague, this is a bad soap opera to continue. I believe that many Prague citizens already regret how they voted,” Urban told the MF DNES editorial staff.
The fact that the SPD is able to pull together with the ANO and TOGETHER movements was shown right away at the constituent assembly meeting in November. With joint votes, for example, they introduced supervision over the serving city council or authorized Marvanová to supervise the audits connected with the corruption case of the Prague transport company known as Dosimeter.
Possible cooperation is recorded by personalities in the representative club of the SPD. “When we look at the specific names, this candidate is not represented by typical extremist politicians,” points out Jelínek.
The club is led by architect and urban planner Milan Urban. With this year’s election winner, connect him to his previous work in TOP 09, where ten years ago he was the chairman of the representative club at the municipality.
“I was led to withdraw from TOP 09 and join the SPD by developments in Europe and the direction of the European Union. TOP 09 has become such a Euroactivist party, which is contrary to my feelings. I am close to traditional conservative views, which are defended only by the SPD in the Czech Republic,” Urban explains his motives.
Contacts from the archdiocese
The second representative is Josef Nerušil. The latter is close to the Prague archbishopric and the political circles around him thanks to his previous engagement, in which he, for example, managed the social network for Cardinal Dominik Duka.
The last representative who ran as an independent is Zdeněk Seidl. The renowned doctor was a member of the ČSSD for many years and even worked in the Central Bohemian Region under David Rath and Jaroslava Jermanová.
“If these people were not on the SPD candidate list, they would be welcome partners for the emerging coalition. The problem is only with the brand. It cannot be ruled out that the minority government will try to win one of them over to its side, because every vote will be very valuable,” anticipates Jelínek.
