Rally in Zurich and Basel: protest against the election of “ölbert Rösti”
Demonstrations against the election of Ölbert Rösti in Basel and Zurich
Climate strike activists have called for a protest against the allocation of the environment department to Albert Rösti.
In Zurich and Basel, several dozen people demonstrated on Saturday against the allocation of the environmental department to Albert Rösti. In Zurich, a good two dozen people came together, accompanied by music, in the direction of Helvetiaplatz.
The police presence was relatively large: at least four vehicles escorted the rally participants. Trams and cars had to wait behind the parade and at the crossings. A rally was planned at Helvetiaplatz. When asked, the police said the situation remained calm.
In Basel, around two dozen people also demonstrated against the fact that Albert Rösti, a car lobbyist, would become Minister for the Environment. The people came together in the afternoon at Claraplatz.
Climate strike Switzerland had called for the rallies. The “nightmare for Swiss climate policy” has come true, the activists wrote in a statement. They describe Albert Rösti as “Oelbert Rösti” and criticize that “a climate skeptic and a committed oil lobbyist” is taking over the environment department.
National Council and SVP parliamentary group leader Thomas Aeschi showed little understanding for the action. If you don’t agree with the first official acts of the new Federal Council, you can probably have a debate about his work as head of the Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications, says Aeschi to the “view”. “But an attack on his person before he has taken office, I dislike that.”
Albert Rösti was together with Elisabeth Baume-Schneider last Wednesday elected to the Federal Council become. On January 1, he will take over the Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications.
