The newest mural painting commemorates the first playground street in Budapest
The last thing about the Neopaint firewall painting group is in connection with the painting depicting Szinyei’s Airship we wrote, which was painted on the wall of Pál Merse High School in Szinyei. Now another educational institution, namely VII. Their work appeared in the courtyard of the Alsóerdősor school in the district, which is also visible from Szötsévé-Barát utca visible.
The execution was made difficult by the weather at the end of November and beginning of December, they write in a Facebook post, adding that they asked their old friend, Brunszkó ‘Nikon’ Laci, to design the illustration, who completed his graphic with the following words:
“Barát utca became Budapest’s first “play street” in 1954, when the street was closed to traffic between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., and targeted traffic was limited to a speed of 5 km/h. It is a nice side note that the first playground street was handed over to the children by, among others, police major István Barát. The central part of the picture, the little girl drawing a sunbeam, the jumping school and the speckled ball, remembers this story.
A few streets from here was the part of the city nicknamed Chicago in the 19th century, which, according to popular belief, got its name not because of poor public safety, but because of a layout similar to the right-angled streets of the American city. The writer Pál Békés mentions the following in his work Csikágó, gang novel: “Engineers marked out the route of the future streets between the cabbage fields and tangled kitchen gardens.”
The pumpkins, potato blossoms, peppers, tomatoes, cabbage and other vegetables surrounding the image are a reminder of these kitchen gardens that were once green here.”
The location was already a familiar encounter because in 2014 the Budapest Bang was painted in this yard. picture on 1000m2, designed by Zsolt Vidák. The new mural is from VII. It was made on behalf of the Municipality of Erzsébetváros in the district.
