The state of emergency in the Republic of Moldova was extended for another 60 days, in the context of threats to national security. The Government’s proposal regarding the extension of the state of emergency throughout the country, execution with dates of December 6, was supported by the vote of 52 deputies, during the Parliament session on Thursday, December 1, 2022.
“I come before you after some very difficult times for our country. The barbaric bombings of November 15 and 23 directed against the civilian energy infrastructure in Ukraine caused massive disconnections in the power system of the Republic of Moldova, endangering the safety of our citizens. It took major efforts to restore power, during which people were left in the dark, public transport was paralyzed, mobile phone networks went down and, in some cases, even medical procedures were interrupted. Regrettably, there are very solid indications that such events will be repeated in the following current winters”, said Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița from the Parliament’s tribune.
During the Government meeting on November 30, the Minister of the Interior, Ana Revenco, a declare that the need for extension of the state of emergency is determined by the risks and threats that are increasing in intensity and directly aim at national security, both from the point of view of supplying the Republic of Moldova with energy resources in the cold period of 2022-2023, and from the point of view of order . and public safety.
On November 23, the Russian bombings on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure had, again, consequences on the inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova. Several districts, including the municipality of Chisinau, were left without electricity and thermal energy for several hours. At the same time, the disconnection of electricity paralyzed the traffic in Chisinau, traffic jams were recorded on all the main arteries in the center of the capital. And several people were stuck in the elevators, requiring the intervention of rescuers.
The Russian bombings on the power plants in Ukraine caused interruptions in our country as well, because the energy systems of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are interconnected. The energy breakdowns in Ukraine also led to the automatic interruption of a transit line through which the Republic of Moldova imports electricity from Romania. Following these events, Minister Nicu Popescu requested the urgent summoning of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Russian ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Oleg Vasnetsov, I quote “to express our countries’ strong protest in relation to the bombing of Ukrainian civilian infrastructure targets . which created electricity shortage”.
Russia started the war against Ukraine in the early hours of February 24. Also on that day, a state of emergency was established in the Republic of Moldova for 60 days in connection with the situation in Ukraine, which was later extended by 45 or 60 days.
