Lesy Praha: Untraditional but with a future, these are our Christmas hemlocks
29/11/2022 17:56 | Press Release
Christmas hemlocks with a future are here again after a year! We started the sixth year of our heart project on November 22, 2022.
As in previous years, we will be selling special potted Christmas hemlocks. Again, these are forest white fir seedlings, which may not meet the traditional parameters of the perfect Christmas tree, neither in size nor in shape, but they have one tremendous value – they are trees directly grown and intended for planting in the landscape, and therefore do not need to be planted after Christmas end up in the bins.

This year, we have prepared a total of 1,000 hemlocks for sale, which you will be able to plant directly in the forest among other trees in the spring of 2023, for example on the occasion of the Hemlock Day in the Kunratické forest (April 1, 2023).
We grew the roughly half-meter trees for the project in our forestry school in Čimický háj, where we have been growing coniferous and deciduous seedlings for several years, which we then plant in Prague’s forests. Even if the production of seedlings from the cultivation areas located in the middle of the Čimický grove is far from covering our annual need for planting in Prague’s forests, it is an important source for maintaining the correct composition of plantings and for possible outages in external supplies. The fact that we grow saplings here from seed in conditions that correspond to their future habitat also increases their resistance and viability.
If the correct procedure is followed (slow temperature acclimatization, watering and provision of air humidity), the trees should successfully cope with their demanding Christmas task in heated Prague houses and apartments. And since these are not standard Christmas conifers grown just and only for the Christmas season, but trees normally grown for planting in the landscape, they should later be able to successfully move into the ground in the garden or in the forest. Those who do not have a garden where they could plant a hemlock after the winter, or those who want to give the tree complete freedom, can take it to the forest in the spring of 2023 for the Hemlock Day event, where former Christmas hemlocks will be planted under the supervision of our foresters .

White fir used to be our most abundant conifer in the past, but in the course of the 20th century it simply disappeared from Czech forests, mainly due to inappropriate forest management, drying out of the landscape or industrial emissions. By planting young seedlings, we help it gradually return to the Czech nature. Fir trees are among the trees that we plant in Prague’s forests every year.
