However, the Christmas markets in front of the New Town Hall are not meant to compete with the markets on the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Eight stands here are supposed to offer products from sellers from contribution and non-profit organizations or from sheltered workshops.
“In those stalls you will not only see traditional handicrafts, but especially products that are made in some of Prague’s homes, for example for people with disabilities. You can come and support them by buying a product that they made themselves,” said Jan Chabr (TOP 09) – councilor m of Prague.
“It’s really something that I think should be here in Prague, but simply places like Old Town Square and the like have long-term contracts,” said Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) – mayor of the city. m of Prague.
The markets in front of the New Town Hall offer a typical Christmas assortment. There are Advent wreaths, ornaments, candles, original jewelry, glass, textiles or wooden puppets. Mariánské náměstí literally comes alive at Christmas. As part of the weekend programs, people can look forward to performances by children from Prague schools and colleges, as well as professional artists.
“We already had those markets ready last year, but unfortunately the government regulation with covid ruined it for us, but this year we have prepared a replacement. Every Advent weekend you will find a lot of performers here, they are primarily students of Prague schools, whether they are art schools and or they are also individual Prague artists,” said Jan Chabr (TOP 09) – councilor. m of Prague.
The performance will end with the last Advent weekend. The markets are open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will last until December 18. As part of the opening of the Advent markets, the Christmas tree was also lit on Mariánské náměstí. Then the main one on the Old Town Square also lit up.
