This article was first published in Finansavisen Motor.
VETERAN CAR: RM Sotheby’s has organized a number of large and small auctions in Europe, and this weekend their first auction in Munich will take place at Motorworld.
The main part of the roughly 75 objects comes from large collections, where «The Bavarian Legends Collection» naturally contains many BMW models.
Large selection
Among the many BMW models, the positive expectations are for a 1958 507 Roadster that Elvis had, which was recently in Norway at the Oslo Motor Show.
The rare car, of which only 252 copies were produced, must be sold without a minimum price, and expectations are in the range of 16 to 20 million kroner.
In total, there are around 25 BMW models with prices from DKK 250,000 and up, and one of the cars has an exciting Nordic history that also includes Norway.
Success
BMW had great success with its two-liter sports racer 328 right from its debut in 1936. The year later it introduced the powerful 328 engines in its street-style sports car 327, and the result was called the 327/28.
With a top speed of 140 km/h, it quickly became a favorite among private sports car enthusiasts who also took part in some racing as amateurs.
Danskeid sports car
Among those who were tempted by the new model was a Danish customer in Aalborg, who got it via the Danish agent in Copenhagen, Skandinavisk Motor.
A few years after the war it was sold to amateur racer Peter Morgens Skarring. He took the car both to Danish races, and also to the Dutch Tulip Rally in 1950 and the first Midnattssols rally in the same year. In 1951, the Danish enthusiast entered the Rally Viking in Norway.
On a long hike
In 1953 it got its third owner, and in the coming decade it changed owners several times before it was separated and put away in 1964. After a garage fire in 1970, it was sold again, this time as a restoration project.
The Swedish BMW 328 expert restored the chassis, but unfortunately the owner died before the car was finished. Then everything stopped again, until the car was bought by a Finnish BMW enthusiast in 1999.
He had the remaining work done on both engineering and bodywork, so that he has enjoyed it for 20 years. Well, it’s time for a new owner to take over, and if you want a BMW 327/28 with a touch of Norwegian history, the opportunity is here.
The estimate is in the range of DKK 1.5 to 1.8 million.
