On the map, where new highways are being built in Hungary
On the first of September, the operation and maintenance of the 1,237 kilometer expressway took over from Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt. (MKIF). According to promises, the company will renovate 538 kilometers of the existing road over the next 11 years. In addition, it is building 272 kilometers of new motorways and expanding the network with 273 kilometers of new lanes.
Pursuant to the contract, the MKIF will also have an additional 161 kilometers of expressway, the construction of which was contracted by the Hungarian State.
Comparing these, after the construction of the new highways, the concession company will take care of a total of 1,670 kilometers of expressway network.
The Azat government entrusted the company with a 35-year concession. If this is completed, the concession company will return a fully renovated, guaranteed road network to the state.
What, when and where is it being built?
So far we know that about the developments to start, among other things
- the construction of the M81, aimed at relieving the load on the M0, from Komárom in a length of 102 km, touching Székesfehérvár to Sárbogár.
- This route, already known as the M8, will run from Sárbogárd, touching the M6 motorway, across the Danube to the northern part of Kecskemét, with a length of 76 km.
- According to the plans, the 31-kilometer section of the M3 between Vásárosnamény and Beregdaróc will be completed, thus the M3 will also reach the national border.
- The 61-kilometer section of the M4 from Kisújszállás to Berettyóújfalu will also be built, making it the entire length of the M4.
Now, however, it has been found on a map, which not only shows this, but also the dates for which these investments are planned.
The M81 could be completed in 2033, the M8 in 2031-2032, and the northern tip of the M3 in 2030. The M4 may reach its full length by 2029-2030.
The map dated summer 2022 also shows that the section of the M3 between Gyöngyös and the M0 (64.5 km) can be expanded twice to 3 lanes by 2030. Lane expansion may also take place by 2028 on the M0-Balatonvilágos (74.4 km) section on the M7. On the M1, the Bicske and Győr lines are also planned to be expanded in 2027 and 2030.
MKIF is also preparing for other expansions on expressways. This can take place on the M1 up to the national border until 2031. There will also be renewals, such as on the M4, M44, M35, M7 or M86.
The state can also remain active
In addition to the concession company, the state is also not stopping development, but the fact that there is an investment freeze on projects that have not yet started causes uncertainty. In any case, it can be expanded on the M0-Bicske section, which is being prepared for 2027 on the M1 with 2 x 3 lanes. For new constructions
- the extension of the M6 to the national border by 2024,
- the Szentkirály–Lakitelek (39 km) section on the M44 for 2024 and 2026,
- on the M4, the section Törökszentmiklós–Kisújszállás (36 km) by 2026,
- the Mátészalka–Csenger (45 km) section on the M49 by 2029,
- the 36-kilometer section between Vásárosnamény and Záhony on the M34 is expected by 2027.
