Time is up for the Istanbul earthquake, 100 thousand people will be affected
Gazi University Earthquake Engineering Application and Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Samet Arslan said that the 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Düzce Gölyaka was not unusual, it was an expected earthquake.
Arslan said, “It is an earthquake that is almost unpredictable even in terms of timing. These lines have movement speeds relative to each other. The Central Anatolia Region, the region in the middle of the North Anatolian Fault Line, says that it moves westward every year. During this movement, compression occurs from time to time and a breakage occurs. Movement occurs on both sides of the fault, it gets stuck. When it is unbearably thick, it suddenly breaks, this is the moment of the earthquake,” he said.
‘SEVERE EARTHQUAKE HAS NOT HAPPENED YET’
prof. It moves to Marmara, Aegean, and then to Greece. When they follow big earthquakes, they have this order. Scientifically, there is this. We expected that damage on the North Anatolian Fault Line was not an earthquake,” he said.
‘ISTANBUL EARTHQUAKE IS CLOSE THAN YESTERDAY’
Stating that it is early to comment on whether the Düzce earthquake will trigger the Istanbul earthquake, Prof. Dr. Samet Arslan, “Istanbul earthquake will happen one way or another. If we look at it statistically and scientifically, Time is up for the Istanbul earthquake. There is no point in closing our eyes, we have to face the truth. Istanbul earthquake is closer than yesterday. When the studies are put on top of each other, there are some tests for the earthquake that will happen in Istanbul, there is an option such as breaking the uninfiltrated faults at the same time or breaking them sequentially. An earthquake is expected in Istanbul that will not be lower than 7, but not higher than 7.3“used.
UP TO 100 THOUSAND PEOPLE WILL BE SERIOUSLY AFFECTED
Arslan pointed out that when such an earthquake occurs, the regions close to the fault line will feel the earthquake more intensely, “It turns out that a 5 kilometer band of the south coast of Istanbul will be severely affected by the earthquake, as the islands will show, even as far as Marmara Ereğlisi.. Where do we derive this result? This is especially the case with the soil characteristics on the European side. Where the ground is soft; Düzce is one of them, the effect of the earthquake is hissing much louder. Where the ground is rocky, you have little exposure. We expect this finish to hiss very seriously. It seems that this region will have a serious impact on at least 30 thousand buildings, and a serious impact on 100 thousand property owners. The earthquake itself is not a disaster, the thoughts in it are that the environment is solid or from here it is an unfounded disaster,” he said.
