Switzerland still allows Brits to work up to 3 months a year without a permit
The United Kingdom and Switzerland have agreed to extend the Services Mobility Agreement for a further three years.
The extension of the agreement means professionals from the UK can continue to travel for up to 90 days a year and operate freely on Swiss territory without having to obtain a permit. SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
According to the British government, the agreement reached between the two countries follows intense discussions. Additionally, the same said that this deal has been in effect since early 2021, noting that it has had a transformative impact on companies’ ability to provide services by allowing employees to easily work in both states.
The UK government also stressed that moving skilled labor between the UK and Switzerland is very important for exporting services, as this makes it easier to carry out projects, helping to attract new customers and close deals.
The move was welcomed by UK Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch, who said the deal ensures UK businesses benefit from the opportunities that arise.
“The British and Swiss economies are service hubs and closely linked. Today’s agreement is a win-win situation for both sides. From financial services in Edinburgh to cybersecurity in Wales, the deal ensures UK businesses benefit from the tremendous opportunities at their fingertips.” says the statement by Trade Minister Badenoch.
Furthermore, Trade Minister Badenoch stressed that he is looking forward to a strong relationship between the two countries, while stressing that the trade deal is worth 44 billion euros in 2021.
The Confederation of British Industry’s chief economist, Rain Newton-Smith, also welcomed the move. She said the opportunity to work in Switzerland is extremely beneficial for companies trading with the UK export market.
“Businesses will hope this provides a crucial boost as the UK and Switzerland prepare to negotiate an expanded free trade agreement,” said Newton Smith.
The renewal of the agreement was also welcomed by City of London Corporation Policy Chairman Chris Hayward. He stressed that it is of paramount importance for the sector to strengthen trade ties in services
In addition to the above, it has been revealed that the UK and Switzerland have also agreed to start negotiations on a new free trade agreement. According to the authorities, the agreement will further boost trade between the two countries.
