Sweden arrests 2 more people suspected of espionage
Sweden’s security authority said the operation, which included house searches, was carried out with the help of the police and the Armed Forces. The spy agency said an investigation “has been ongoing for some time.”
The arrests were made early in the morning in the Stockholm area. No details of those arrested were released.
Fredrik Hultgren Friberg, spokesman for Sweden’s internal security service, known by the acronym SAPO, told Aftonbladet that “there was a need to quickly arrest the suspects.”
A spokesperson for Sweden’s Armed Forces told Aftonbladet that they “supported SAPO with two helicopters”.
The prosecutor’s office emphasized that the case was not connected to two Iranian-born brothers who earlier this month were charged in Sweden with aggravated espionage for allegedly spying for Russia.
On November 11, Sweden charged the two naturalized Swedes with spying for Russia and its GRU military intelligence service for about a decade, from 2011 to 2021.
One of the men worked for Sweden’s domestic intelligence service. Both have denied wrongdoing.
