A subway to the Sachsenhäuser Berg in Frankfurt
The CDU parliamentary group in the Römer proposes using the Binding brewery’s move to extend the subway from Südbahnhof.
Frankfurt – The CDU wants to use the departure of the Binding brewery to extend the subway route to the Sachsenhäuser Berg in Frankfurt to build. According to a motion by the parliamentary group, the future commercial area that could be built on the brewery’s premises should be more attractive. But many residents of Sachsenhausen would also benefit from this.
Whoever adjusts to new neighbors since the Radeberger Group announced at the end of September that it intends to close the traditional brewery site of Henninger und Binding on Darmstädter Landstrasse by October 2023 for cost reasons. 150 employees are affected. However, the headquarters of the Radeberger Group, i.e. the administration, is to remain at the location.
CDU proposal for the subway route in Frankfurt: Commercial use is still the aim
The announcement had triggered horrified reactions in city politics. The magistrate had announced that they would seek talks with Radeberger. But no one sees a realistic chance of preventing the closure. Instead, the SPD is demanding that the approximately five-hectare site continue to be used as an industrial park. The CDU now also agrees to this demand.
“In Frankfurt there is an acute shortage of space, including commercial space,” recalls Albrecht Kochsiek, spokesman for planning policy for the CDU parliamentary group in Römer. “PossibleTherefore, existing commercial areas should not be given up, so that, for example, companies that offer overalls jobs still have a chance to settle.” The magistrate should check whether the binding areas are still for use by companies, and “a connection concept” develop.
In order to upgrade the entire district, Kochsiek proposes that the subway extension, which has been planned since 1976, should now be implemented. “A subway station on Mailänder Strasse should also be planned in order to make the new binding area even more attractive for businesses and their employees,” says the Christian Democrats’ application. Both sides benefited greatly from each other, Albrecht Kochsiek. then the further construction of the subway would also make much more sense if the previously completely sealed off binding area was now opened.
The Frankfurt transport company relies on a novelty: 100 meter long, continuous subway trains.
CDU proposal for the subway route in Frankfurt: New routes across the brewery area
So far, a station that would probably be located a little north of Mailänder Strasse under Darmstädter Landstrasse would have suffered from the fact that its catchment area would have been limited to the brewery itself and only the companies and residents west of Darmstädter Landstrasse. The brewery site then blocks the residential areas that have arisen east of it for several hundred meters from Darmstädter Landstraße.
With a new system, passages could now be provided, for example in Aschaffenburger Straße, explains Kochsiek. “Then the many residents in the neighborhoods around the Henningerturm will also benefit from this.” They would no longer be solely dependent on the unattractive bus connections on Hainer Weg, but would be able to get to the new subway station in a short distance. This also applies to the residents of the areas on Mailänder Straße and to the west and east of it.
The idea of extending the A route of the subway to the Sachsenhäuser Warte is currently included in the city’s local transport plan as one of the first implementations to be implemented in the longer term. At the instigation of the SPD parliamentary group, the city councilors initially specified a check as to whether the subway should actually be extended here or whether a tram line should be built.
Since 1984, the underground trains of today’s lines U1, U2, U3 and U8 have ended at Südbahnhof. However, the tunnel already leads much further south and is used as a turning facility. The underground structure currently ends under the playground in Grethenweg. From there to the grounds of the Binding brewery, the distance is only about 100 meters as the crow flies. This means that only a good 500 meters of tunnel would have to be dug to reach a Mailänder Strasse station. There are still 1,000 meters of subway to go to Sachsenhäuser Warte. There has also been a long-standing proposal to build a Park+Ride multi-storey car park at the southern entrance to the city. Drivers could transfer to subways there. (Dennis Pfeiffer-Goldmann)
