Salon de la Photo in Geneva: A tour of the highlights
The Geneva Salon de la Photo is the joint novelty fair and product show for the Suisse Romande, which today, Friday, November 18, 2022 and tomorrow, Saturday, invites photo professionals and enthusiasts to visit. Launched by Profot four years ago, they brought together around 15 companies and more than 30 brands and presented them at the Forum de Genève, a few minutes’ walk from Genève-Cornavin train station.
As soon as the doors opened, the two halls were already well frequented, especially those stands that had new products that had only recently been announced, such as the analogue Leica M6, the Fujifilm X-T5 with 40 megapixels, the Sony Alpha 7VR with the faster sensor or the new battery-powered compact flash Five from Elinchrom. “Trade fairs and roadshows like this are enormously important to me and an indispensable supplement to the information on the Internet,” one visitor told me, “because here you can touch the devices, try them out and ask the technical advisors all your questions about it,” he argues.
In fact, this year there are more novelties here at the Salon de la Photo in Geneva than previous times, especially since the fair was canceled twice due to the pandemic. Then came delivery bottlenecks, from which the manufacturers have largely recovered. This is why many new products can be shown to the public for the first time here in Geneva this year. We discovered some exciting things on our tour:
A star is sure to die Leica M6, the new edition of one of the most successful Leica models of the analogue age. That sounds bold, but it really isn’t, because the first is an immense demand for cameras for film around the world, and the second, there’s already a waiting list for this Leica model. The fact that the new Leica M6 not only looks classy, but is also mechanically perfect and of high quality, doesn’t need to be particularly emphasized with this brand. (Info ->)
Even as a primeur should die Fujifilm X-T5 walk through the salon. Although a lot has been heard and read about the X variant with 40 megapixels and 8K video, very few have been able to get their hands on it. Now there is an opportunity in Geneva. By the way, it should be available now. (Info ->)
Erlkönig character has the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, which can be touched and sniffed for the first time as a sample here in Geneva. The software is still being written and should be on the market shortly. In any case, they should be an interesting model for professionals with the 40 frames per second and the new AF subject recognition. Canon will also be showing the long, high-aperture tubes with focal lengths of 400, 600 and 800 millimeters at the stand. (Info ->)
Next on everyone’s lips is dying Sony Alpha 7R V. Despite its 61-megapixel resolution, the autofocus system has been greatly improved with 86% coverage and the display folds out for portrait mode, which vloggers and influencers will especially appreciate. (Info ->)
Announced two days ago and now ready to hand is the bright one Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 for Fujifilm X cameras – Incidentally, the first APS-C zoom from Sigma for mirrorless systems. The lens is very compact and has the noble matt finish, like most Sigma lenses. (Info ->)
Another debut is the cordless compact flash unit «Five» by Elinchrom. Complete independence from the mains is of course a plus when recording on location, while the battery charging while mains operation in the studio is another plus. (Info ->)
And speaking of studio and outdoor light, the stand of nanlite, represented in Switzerland by Dedotec, cannot be seen. The Chinese manufacturer has a wide range of permanent LED light sources that are in an interesting price range. (Info ->)
The new Nikkor 6.3/800mm VR S You don’t see the new mirrorless Z cameras every day either. It’s surprisingly light that even free-hand shots can be easily managed with it. It’s worth looking through – here at the Salon in Geneva. (Info ->)
Eizo is also present with a whole range of monitors. Of course, the Color Edge line is particularly interesting for image processing, and you can get professional advice here. Star of the day is the ColorEdge Highlight CG3146 with 4096 x2160 px HDR resolution and contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 – a device for the highest demands. (Info ->)
at Epson stands the SP-C900 in the centre, a very powerful A2+ inkjet printer designed for professional photographers, artists, photo service providers and ambitious amateur photographers. It is particularly characterized by deep black tones and an extended color space in the blue range. (Info ->)
phase one shows the adjustable XT camera with the IQ4 back, which boasts an impressive 150 megapixel resolution. All the software is built in, even Capture One, and the touchscreen operation is just amazing. (Info ->)
Alpa shows with the 12 panoramas A new standard that is interesting for panoramic shots with a vertical shift of 20mm (+10mm, -10mm) and a horizontal shift of 70mm (r: 35mm, l: 35mm). However, this requires lenses that have a correspondingly large image circle, such as the Alpagon HR 70, 90 and 138mm focal lengths. (Info ->)
A discovery at the Salon in Geneva is the French magazine «Profession Photographer», which is only available in French. Aimed at a professional readership, they cover a broad spectrum every two months, with practice reports, portfolios and cultural articles. (Info ->)
