Russia and China did not support the IAEA resolution on nuclear safety in Ukraine
Russia and China have voted against the Board’s ruling, managing the Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) investigation into nuclear safety in Ukraine. This was reported by the Permanent Mission of Russia to international organizations in Vienna.
The resolution was adopted on 17 November. In particular, it says that during the inspection in Ukraine, which are examined in space, no signs of unnoticed nuclear activity are found or appear with the appearance of “dirty bombs”. It is argued that Moscow’s statement on this matter does not require substantiation.
The Russian statement says the IAEA Board of Governors is adopting a factually erroneous and unprofessional resolution on nuclear safety, security and safeguards in Ukraine. It is noted that this is a step towards the politicization of the work of the IAEA.
China and Russia voted against the majority. Saudi Arabia, Income, Namibia, Kenya, India, Vietnam abstained from voting. The delegations of Libya and Burundi did not take part in the voting. As noted in the Russian mission, the countries where most of the world lives refused to support the project.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation previously reported that Kyiv intends to use a “dirty bomb” and blame Russia for this. The IAEA is considering inspectors in Ukraine to study nuclear facilities. According to the head of the agency, Rafael Grossi, experts have not identified signs of the preparation of such a bomb.
“Dirty bomb” – a container with an explosive charge and a radioactive isotope. When the container is blown up, pollution of large areas is also formed.
