Meir is full of waste despite a call from the city (Antwerp)
A lot of waste was put out on the Meir on Tuesday evening, despite the city’s call to exceptionally keep all the waste for a week longer. That call came because much less waste will be collected on Wednesday.
It will be a difficult week for waste collection in Antwerp, the city of Antwerp already announced on Monday. Due to the much announced on Wednesday, less waste will be collected. They were asked to keep waste inside as much as possible. That invitation clearly does not apply to all shopkeepers on the Meir, where the waste is normally collected on Wednesdays. On Tuesday evening, the shopping street was full of boxes and bags of residual waste.
The question is when that waste will be collected, because the rest of the week will also be difficult. The city also asks households where the garbage is collected on Thursday and Friday to keep everything until the next collection day the following week.
“It’s a situation. There is the strike on Wednesday and the public holiday on Friday. We also expect little from city cleaning on Thursdays. There is normal pick-up during a public holiday, but fly dumping is not removed. Even then, we expect to remove too little waste,” said future alderman Els van Doesburg on Monday.
