New abortion clinic opens in Amsterdam: “Breaking the taboo”
The first appointments are already planned: an abortion clinic will be added in Amsterdam Zuidoost next week. It is a medical center for women and that includes termination of pregnancy, also known as abortion. “We have to make the subject negotiable and normal, and we try to combine that by combining all that care,” says director Jorien Nijland.
The already existing abortion clinic on Sarphatistraat has a branch in both Amsterdam and Haarlem. Together, about 6,500 treatments are performed there per year. “We think there is a need for a second clinic in Amsterdam,” say Nijland and nurse Marije Mostert of the new Epione clinic. They estimate that they are about 400 to 500 versions.
“We want to make a place for women where sexual health is central. We offer abortion and start STI testing and contraception.” It’s important to be able to quickly come up with a follow-up contraceptive plan with those clients.”
“No matter how old from where, all walks of life have not made it”
The care that can be offered at the clinic can also be found in other places in Amsterdam. Rob Ben Bens, director of the clinic, at Sartistraat “We already have 50 capacities to perform our treatments. Still, there is a slight downward trend in the Amsterdam region.”
The question therefore arises why he has opted for Amsterdam and not for a region in which there are no clinics yet. “If you look at the statistics”, Nijland starts. “Then you see that most of the demand comes from the Randstad. In Friesland van Drenthe, the demand is simply less.”
“But that doesn’t change the fact that I would be happy to help set up a clinic in those regions.” The most important thing is that women become more open for discussion, the two think. “We are a professionalized team and we are fully committed to this care.”
