Scheinherr (Prague itself): You will go better in Vítkov, the new footbridge will connect Karlín with the monument
Access to the park in Vítkov will be more convenient from Karlín. The new barrier-free footbridge will bridge the railway line from Pernerova Street over the new apartment building and enable a more comfortable path for pedestrians in Vítkov and on to Žižkov.
The new footbridge continues in an extended axis along Pecková street on the Holešovice-Karlín bridge over the Vltava River, which is currently under construction. This will create a more convenient connection between Holešovice, Karlín, Vítkov hill and Žižkov. From the Karlín side, the footbridge will be accessed by an elevator in the tower of a private investor’s apartment building, the footbridge will cross the railway line and go to the pedestrian route leading to Vítkova Hill. Pedestrian routes in the park regulating the Prague 3 district.

“Two apartment buildings will be built in Pernerova Street. A tower with an elevator will stand between them, from which a covered footbridge will lead to Vítkov. It will be 56 meters long and less than three meters wide. With its analogy, it will refer to the railway, above which it will rise, and its location will link to the Štvanická footbridge, which we are currently building. The apartment building and the bridge itself will significantly improve the accessibility of the city. Thanks to the new investments, it will now be possible to reach Vítkova Hill and also the Military Historical Institute without barriers. The accessibility between the city districts that are still divided by the railway is improving,” says Deputy Mayor for Transport Adam Scheinherr.
The bridge’s investor is the capital city of Prague, the feasibility study was approved by the Prague city council on Monday, October 31. Technical administration of communications hl. m of Prague will now start processing the construction project. Construction could begin within five years.
The bridge is designed as a roofed steel-concrete transparent structure composed of subtle elements. This is a so-called Vierendel beam supplemented with drawn diagonals. Two longitudinal beams are connected by steel cross-members into a spatially rigid box structure, into which the so-called UHPFRC (ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete) panels of the bridge deck and roof are inserted.
On the Vítkov side, the footbridge will rest on micropiles. The railing is made of a thin steel mesh for the entire height of the footbridge. The lighting of the footbridge is ensured by means of longitudinal LED strips inserted into the structure illuminating the walking surface. The main array of beams will be 56 meters long, the width of the supporting structure is 2.8 meters, the passage width is 2.5 meters, and the total height of the structure reaches 3.25 meters.
Two new houses of private investor Richard Sobotka will be built near the footbridge. These are designed so that their height corresponds to the tallest house on the street block, i.e. 29 meters, and are lower than most other new buildings in Karlín. The building will have a total of nine floors above ground with 77 apartments, seven non-residential units and 75 parking spaces.
