The cantonal council becomes data centers for heating apartments
In the future, data centers in the canton of Zurich are to feed their waste heat into heating networks in order to be able to use it to heat apartments.
On Monday, October 31, 2022, the cantonal council issued an urgent postulate from GLP, SP and EPP with 139 votes to 28.
It is obvious that we should use the waste heat from the data centers to heat our homes instead of dying environmentjustified GLP-Canton Councilor Michael witness (Winterthur) the advance.
It is important to anchor this obligation to connect to a thermal network now, before all data centers are built and then possibly in the wrong place.
The government council was actually ready to process the initiative.
Frontal attack against the new data center industry
die FDP was against it, which is why the issue came up in the Council in the first place. For them, it’s a frontal attack on the new data center industry.
That’s a pity digitalization and the canton of Zurich. Data centers in Switzerland consume around 2.1 billion kilowatt hours.
The new data center of the US company Vantage in Winterthur-Hegi, for example, needs half as much electricity as the entire city.
The government council now has one year to prepare a report with an application.
