The first 50 minutes of the match have only one protagonist: Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian play a perfect set, breaking the serve twice from Medvedev who had barely conceded a break point in the four previous matches. Service quality (95% of points won with the first in the partial), 19 winners and 16 points out of 19 won on the net for Shapovalov who closes the set with a score of 6-4. From here on, however, the inertia of the match changes: Medvedev comes out, Shapovalov goes down on the serve (just 51% of firsts in the field) and makes a few mistakes too many. The Russian concedes just five games to his opponent between the second and third set and closes at the seventh match point available in the decisive set, dominated far and wide. For Medvedev, already certain of a place at the ATP Finals in Turin, this is the 15th career title, the second of the calendar year after Los Cabos in August. Fifth defeat in six finals played, however, for Shapovalov who did everything possible to stem Hurricane Medvedev.
Auger-Aliassime triumphs in Basel
Felix’s incredible form moment continues Cochlea-Aliassime. The Canadian won the ATP 500 in Basel, beating Holger in the final Rune in due course (6-3, 7-5). Record numbers for the 2000 class coached by Frederic Fontang and Toni Nadal, in his third consecutive title after Florence and Antwerp: among active players he is only the fifth to succeed after Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Ruud. Auger-Aliassime won in Basel without losing his serve and has not lost the serve in the last seven matches played, saving just 6 break points in total. Incredible numbers for him, one step away from qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals and among the favorites for the Masters 1000 in Paris Bercy.
