Siena, lighting redevelopment for the historic center is underway
The start of works related to the efficiency of the public lighting systems in the historic center of Siena will start on Monday 31 October 2022.
The intervention, which will involve all 1422 points between the first and second phase of the works, will be carried out by the company Edison Next and will be carried out on the companies already existing in the city by replacing the lighting technology currently installed with LED plates for point-to-point remote control.
It is thus possible to combine tradition and innovation, preserving the typical artistic design of the lanterns present in the historic center of Siena and integrating it with more modern technology, which allow energy savings of about 255,000 kWh / year and a reduction in atmospheric emissions of 98 tCO2 / year, with an equivalent in planting of new trees equal to 735 / year.
“An intervention dedicated to energy redevelopment that falls in a very particular historical period – explains the mayor of Siena Luigi De Mossi – guaranteeing the right enhancement to our streets and squares was one of the objectives of this administration. The benefit will be a favor of all the lighting of the historic center. This intervention, which will have no impact on traffic, is part of the first batch of interventions, others will follow in the coming months. A small further step that this Municipality wants to take to support the environment and sustainability ”.
“Any intervention of an infrastructural nature, especially if carried out in historic centers that are real jewels of art and architecture like the Sienese one, involves an exercise of measurement – explains Raffaele Bonardi, Business to Government Director of Edison Next – in search of the minimum impact and maximum comfort and in full respect of the genius loci of sites unanimously considered among the most valuable in the world “.
“It is with this spirit that Edison Next, in synergy with the Sienese administration, intended to design the municipal technical lighting requalification of the historic center of Siena: our goal is first of all to guarantee significant results in terms of improving the efficiency of the systems, energy saving, safety and usability of spaces – continues Bonardi – but also has the ability to add, through light, a further element of overall enhancement of the artistic-monumental heritage of the city, highlighting even more the ‘uniqueness and beauty ”.
The interventions constitute the final phase of the broader work of energy redevelopment and safety of the public facilities in Siena, a work carried out within the framework of the Consip Luce 3 Convention – which the Tuscan city adhered to in 2016 – and which has led, to date, the efficiency of around 8000 light points (on a total plant perimeter of 10,750 light points), with the replacement of old and energy-consuming lighting bodies with latest generation LED cut-off technology.
The work also concerned some of the most renowned city symbols such as Piazza del Campo and Duomo di Siena, helping to enhance their monumentality and architectural beauty, and made it possible to reduce the energy needs connected to the service by more than 65 percent. of public lighting, making the city perfectly aligned with the environmental sustainability standards set by current regulations.
