October 21, 2022 presidency Synodal Department for Closing Churches with the Society and the Mediaprofessor at MGIMO V.R. Legoyda took part in round table about the history of crime in Western countries. The event took place at the Rossiya Segodnya press center in Moscow. Within the framework of the international round table, a report by the MGIMO Research Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia “Church and Politics. Test of a new reality.
The event was attended by Deputy Director of the Center for Statistics on Religious and Society Problems of the Institute of Europe RAS R.N. Lunkin, Director of the Center for Scientific Research of the Institute of International Studies, Associate Professor of the Department of History and Politics of European and American Countries, MGIMO V.V. Vorotnikov and Deputy Head of the Department of Political Science, Researcher at the Center for European Studies Institute of International Studies MGIMO of the Russian Foreign Ministry D.A. Parenkov.
V.R. Legoyda highly appreciated the report of the Institute of International Studies, noting that it “really explores” in modern science, and commented on the topic of the press conference, inscribing the data presented in the report in a broader philosophical and ideological context.
First of all, the Head of the Department for the opening of the Church with society and the media noted that the return of religion to the public and political space is associated with the so-called Enlightenment commemoration, as the British political scientist John Gray called it. The idea of the Enlightenment, according to which people will lose their belonging to their affiliation, including religious ones, will lose their identity and merge into some kind of single civilization based on universal human property rights and natural morality, according to V.R. Legoyda, erroneous, the “Enlightenment project” failed.
The representative of the Church drew attention to the fact that after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Council of the Union, the “end of history” predicted by Francis Fukuyama did not happen. The world has not only not become more stable, transparent and safe, but rather the opposite. The bet on the naturalness of a person, according to V.R. Legoyda turned out to be much more idealistic and detached from reality than the ideas about the world of any developed religion.
In continuation of what was proposed by the professor, MGIMO offered his own view on the possibility and danger of danger in the socio-political space.
To the opened opportunities V.R. Legoyda attributed the rethinking of the thesis that religion is a private matter. This idea is also widespread with the episodes of the Enlightenment and the emergence of separation, which, in the conditions of the Church from the state, made it impossible for a person in the public field to motivate his thoughts, actions, proposals with special religious views. Given that taking away from a person the right to convince motivation means that this is the most important thing in life, V.R. Legoyd.
The absurdity of this situation was confirmed by the well-known sociologist P.A. Sorokin, who attracted her to his celebrity with the aphorism “on Sundays, the puritan believes in God, and on the rest of the days – in the stock exchange.” V.R. The light processing drew attention to the fact that such processes do not occur in the extra-European space, therefore it is very difficult, for example, to find understanding among Muslims, stating that religion is a private matter of a person.
As for the dangers, as their head of the Department for Church Belonging to Society and the Media, they called religion, with its richest historical, axiological and soteriological context, “driven” in the assessments of new ethics, which are not so common as conventional and are developing quite quickly in in contrast to the moral foundations of an exclusive religion that does not prefer the intentional nature of erosion.
Just because of the greater sharpness of the dogmas of V.R. Legoyda believes that the state’s appeal to religious values can be quite productive. In support of this, he recalled the words of the Soviet philosopher M.K. Mamardashvili: “Ideology is the glue of society” and the statement of the Russian historian V.O. Klyuchevsky, who argued that there is no society without ideas, since “society itself is already an idea.”
However, V.R. returned. Legoyd, the danger arises when the state turns into a religion in an ideological instrument. Recent events in Ukraine, when P.A. Poroshenko made the topic of autocephaly one of the main “trump cards” of his election campaign.
According to the MGIMO professor, the countries of the collective West, at the moment the religious card is being played in a similar way, by attacking the Russian Orthodox Church and His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. Actions such as the attachment The primate of the Russian Orthodox Church is the sanctions lists, according to the chairman of the department for the liberation of churches with society and the media, nothing more than the identification and emergence of absurdity, the destruction of “soft power”, the last bridges for communication.
“Conscious dissemination among countries of the collective Western meaning of communication parameters, in my opinion, the commission of a crime,” V.R. Legoyd.
