Amsterdam leads the way in Europe with growth in digital content and digital media service providers
The pace at which the world’s most connected companies continue to evolve in digital infrastructure is unaffected by constraints in geopolitical and economic instability. Companies most connected to the system to deliver the ecosystem – have expanded their digital operations in the past five quarters than they have in the past five years. On average, organizations connect to three times as many partners and metros as possible, consuming more than twice the interconnection bandwidth. Amsterdam is the largest EMEA metro for the growth of content and digital media service providers, and the second largest EMEA metro for the growth of cloud and IT services and energy and utilities.
This is according to the latest Global Interconnection Index (GXI) 2023, an annual market study published by Equinix. As companies reinvent themselves in the wake of the pandemic, ecosystem density has become a catalyst for digital innovation – and that continues to drive interconnection bandwidth growth. According to GXI 2023, simple interconnection bandwidth is expected to reach 27,762+ terabits per second (Tbps) by 2025. This equates to a five-year annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40%, equivalent to 110 zettabytes of data exchanged annually. To put this in perspective, that’s enough bandwidth to support more than 50 million autonomous cars, each profiting more than 2,000 terabytes (TB) of data per year. This forecast shows how organizations are rethinking their business to grow future-proof infrastructure on technology platforms.
Amsterdam interconnection bandwidth
Amsterdam’s interconnection bandwidth is expected to reach 962+ terabits per second (Tbps) by 2025. This equates to a five-year annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39%. In addition, the digital infrastructure in EMEA is 20-30% larger than in other regions. This is an indication that the similarity for organizations here currently lies on hybrid applications. Furthermore, Securities & Trading is the largest business consumer of interconnection width in EMEA, as this sector has more and more bandwidth than usage band in the cloud and digital media services.
“In today’s dynamic world, every business is becoming a digital provider. This requires a new type of digital infrastructure, which is sustainable and revolves around leveraging ecosystems and delivering digital experiences. Who has a digital-first strategy These organizations investing in a robust, forward-looking business model and interconnection with rich ecosystems,” said Steve Madden, Vice President, Digital Transformation & Segmentation at Equinix.

- Amsterdam is the largest EMEA metro for the growth of content and digital media service providers, and the second largest EMEA metro for the growth of cloud and IT services and energy and utilities.
- London is the fastest paying core metro with a CAGR of 43%. Paris and London show the highest percentage of connections with business partners.
- The switch to the edge infrastructure than with the core infrastructure.

“It’s amazing to see that despite the current supply chain constraints and geopolitical and economic instability, organizations are still finding opportunities to scale in a sustainable way. The fact that the majority of IT decision-makers in the Netherlands are only willing to work with IT partners that meet key CO2 reduction targets, future and proud to be part of a company that makes sustainable growth a top priority in their digital transformations and on their path to becoming more sustainable too. services,” said Michiel Eielts (photo), Managing Director for the Benelux at Equinix.
