Russia is fully developing the option of demilitarization of the ZNPP
Despite the fact that the Russian side “supports in principle” the creation of a demilitarized zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), at the moment it considers the demilitarization of the plant impossible. Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy head of the delegation of the first committee of the UN General Assembly, said that the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant cannot be left without the protection of the military, since this creates opportunities for attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“The demilitarization, called the Zaporozhye NPP and the perimeter around it, is such that there is a tendency to increase the degree of its protection, the emergence and occurrence of a reaction, as well as dangerous conditions for countering the offensive of the armed forces of Ukraine,” said Mr. Vorontsov at the UN meeting (quote according to RIA Novosti). He notes that units of the National Guard continue to guard the ZNPP.
Earlier, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that the demilitarization of the ZNPP needs help due to the high level, and it is impossible under adequate conditions. He also stressed that the demilitarization of the facility is not within the competence of the agency.
