Autumn in Debrecen would not be complete without short films, but fortunately for cinema fans, the Malter Film Festival did not leave them without film treats this year either.

This time, already on Thursday, the zeroth day, the events gathered pace: the documentary entitled “Voice of Magyar…” was screened in the Apolló cinema, and then
in the program called Nyakas mozisok, filmmakers from Debrecen sat down at the “round table” to discuss various aspects of their profession and their personal experiences.
At the discussion, Tibor Dusa, József Pólik, Gábor Rózsa, Ferenc Dalnoky, Csaba Martin and József Varga represented the filmmaking profession, and Ferenc Váradi asked them. As it was said there, culturally this city is like Silicon Valley, there is something in it that affects creative activity. You can read Dehir’s report on the meeting here.
On Friday and Saturday, we were able to enjoy the best creations, including two and thirty minute ones.
On Friday, foreign short films were screened in the viewing section from 2 p.m., and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., viewers could watch the Hungarian competition films. On the second day, Saturday, the competition films again lured interested parties to the Apollo from 1 and 3 p.m., and from 5 p.m. they could listen to the round table discussions of the film workshops.
The Department of Animation of the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts, the University of Theater and Film, the Media Department of the Sapientia Transylvanian Hungarian University in Romania, and the Department of Film and Media Studies of the Károly Eszterházy Catholic University were represented here, the participating students and teachers presented their institutions and talked about , why and why the awards given to filmmakers are and are not important, as well as how the filmmakers of the future can get into the university they represent.
Before the award ceremony, Máté Szabó’s film Cruel was screened out of competition, and Emil Hutanu, the founding president of Malter, who was exceptionally unable to come to the festival, but had previously shown the short films in several cinemas in addition to a national tour, also checked in via video message.
– Every film that I take around the country is close to my heart, so it is difficult to choose between them, and it actually causes emotional pain if I “have to give up on someone”. That is why the jury also has a difficult task
– drew attention to Emil in his message.
The jury carrying out this difficult task was Anna Kata Váró, Tamás Fejér, the manager of Apolló cinema and Miklós Szénási, who selected the best film and awarded three special prizes.
Anna Kata Váró said about the work of the jury that they received fewer films this year, but there were a few works that they looked at and knew right away that they would be worthy of an award.
“It wasn’t easy though, we watch the films, take notes, and then sit down for a jury dinner where we argue and vote on the films for 4-5 hours, we’ve never been able to make a decision in less than that time,” he explained.
He emphasized that usually the submitted films are not determined by trends, rather we can see in these works what is happening in the country, what concerns people.
– Young people are very brave in touching on certain topics, trying to show what we are living in now.
This is also interesting because in the case of feature films, which take 5-6 years to prepare, it is more difficult to react to current events than a short film, in which a picture of society emerges beautifully – pointed out Anna Kata Váró.
