The Lumière Festival starts this Saturday, October 15 in Lyon. On this occasion and for a week, the city will live to the rhythm of the seventh art. Several events are also organized in connection with this motivated gathering. Masterclasses, new screenings or even exhibitions and film concerts are planned for eight days, until Sunday 23 October. We summarize the activities and events not to be missed.
A variety of works presented in Lyon
For its 14th edition, the Lumière Festival welcomes a host of artists. Among them, Tim Burton, winner of the Prix Lumière this year. The opportunity to rediscover the work of the filmmaker to whom we owe beetle juice (1988) and Edward Scissorhands (1990), notably during La Nuit Tim Burton, on October 22, or during the screenings of the Festival Lumière pour les Enfants. Festival-goers could also enjoy a Sidney Lumet retrospective (Twelve Angry MenSerpico, The Murder of Lorient Express…), a selection of cult works such as pulp Fiction (1994) and The great Lebowski (1998), or discover black and white classics such as casablanca (1942) and Psychosis (1960). On the guest of honor side, Guillermo Del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu will be in Lyon to present themselves respectively in preview Pinocchio and Bardo, false chronicle of some truths. As for filmmaker James Gray, he will come to defend armageddon time before giving a masterclass. Nicole Garcia, Lee Chang-dong, Monica Bellucci or Nicolas Winding Refn will also be among the guests.
The photo exhibition on Marilyn Monroe
Visitors will be able to discover the photo exhibition on Marilyn Monroe. If this obviously echoes the output of Blond (2022) on Netflix, the work of Sébastien Cauchon brings together exclusive shots, rare prints of the absolute Hollywood icon. The collector reveals for the first time, on the occasion of the Lumière Festival and the 60th anniversary of the death of the star, the treasures of his personal collection through a selection of 60 photographs. The exhibition is to be discovered until December 11 in Les Galeries du Cinéma.
The cine-concert for the 100th anniversary of Nosferatu
Nosferatus will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. On this occasion, the Lumière Festival wanted to pay tribute to one of the most mythical vampire films of the seventh art, a legend of cinema directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, in 1922. The cine-concert of Nosferatus will be orchestrated by one of the most famous conductors of his discipline: Timothy Brock. The performance will take place on Saturday October 20 at 8 p.m., at the Opéra de Lyon.
The emblematic places of the Lumière Festival
At the heart of the Institut Lumière park, festival-goers can take advantage of emblematic places. Among them, the DVD market, the cinema bookshop, the official store and even a restaurant will be located in the Festival Lumière village. Visitors could also pass by the Lumière Museum, which pays homage to the brothers, Louis and Auguste. These attractions represent the nerve center of the Festival for a week, at the heart of which festival-goers will also be able to listen to perform in free concerts, different artists each evening, at 8 p.m.
