Christmas at a discount in Lyon? The increase in the price of electricity due to the war in ukraine push communities to make choices. If the City of Lyon does not wish to close any public establishment, it has decided to reduce the veil concerning the christmas lights.
An energy bill that will soar for the City
Like every year, the City of Lyon will celebrate Christmas with illuminations all over the Capital of Gaul. Like every year, hundreds of thousands of people will browse the shopping centers and boutiques of the Presqu’Île in search of the ideal gift. And yet, it will not be a year like the others.
2022 marks that of accelerated energy sobriety. The energy bill could increase by more than 20 million euros for the Lyon municipality then Mayor Grégory Doucet, his teams and the opposition took 18 measures aimed in particular at reducing electricity consumption.
The illuminations turn off one hour earlier
This is why the Christmas festivities will be slightly turned upside down… but not enough to make a drama out of it. Indeed, the measures remain minimal and will certainly not disturb the big children that are the Lyonnais.
The amplitude of the Christmas lights will be reduced from midnight to 11 p.m. The period of illumination will also be shortened. It will stop a week early in January, i.e. January 8 inclusive.
The Festival of Lights maintained
“All the measures will allow us to maintain public services and achieve -10% energy consumption in one year,” said Gregory Doucetduring the presentation of the energy sobriety plan, Tuesday, October 11, at the Town Hall.
On the other hand, the ecological municipality assured that the famous Festival of Lights will take place as it is. “When it comes to LEDs, the energy consumption is marginal,” explained Grégory Doucet. According to our information, certain animations carried out by companies could be impacted. For example, the Caisse d’Epargne has not yet decided whether to renew a projection on its emblematic tower in Part-Dieu, Incity. If it takes place during this edition of the Festival of Lights, its time amplitude will be reduced from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
