Debrecen – Nearly nine hundred people came to the Korean cultural day organized in Lovarda, where, in addition to the spectacular presentations, we tried on traditional clothes, but Korean gastronomy was also on the table.
The Korean alphabet (Hangul) was created by King Sejong the Great in the 1440s, which is celebrated on October 9 in Korea. On this occasion, a whole day of Korean culture was organized on Saturday with the support of the Debrecen King Sejong Institute and the Debrecen Korean Cultural Association, the Korean Cultural Center.

There were already many people when the gates opened, but people interested in the East Asian country kept coming to the Lovarda: young people, old people and families alike were curious about the programs.
During the afternoon, the focus was first on K-pop, i.e. Korean pop music: we saw the amazing production of the BWave dance group from Budapest, then the spectacular taekwondo demonstration of the Blue Planet Association guided us into the world of martial arts. In the sequel, the organizers also favored those who are interested in traditional dances and music: the students of the Debrecen Szejzong Király Institute demonstrated the use of the csanggu, the most widespread type of drum in Korean folk music, we got to know a plucked instrument similar to a zither, the kungong, but the Debrecen Manwol and the Nawoul dance groups also performed.
In addition to dance and music, the event also featured other Korean arts: we could try calligraphy, paint, make a fan, but Korean gastronomy was also on the table and we could also put on hanbok, i.e. traditional Korean clothing.
Andrea Szabóné Abai, the organizer of the event, the Debrecen Korean Cultural Association (DKKE), said that while last year nearly five hundred people attended the event, this year this number was close to nine hundred.
– Lately, for example, more and more South Korean series are available on Netflix, which have fascinated even those who did not know anything about the country until now, and it could not be.
With our programs, we try to broaden people’s horizons a little more, that there is not only film and music, but that they can find so many wonderful things.
– He told.
Saturday in Debrecen was all about Asian cultures: in addition to the Korean culture day, Japanese traditions and martial arts played a major role in the Déri Museum, and as part of the Great Forest Week, the Confucius Institute of the University of Debrecen hosted a Chinese zither game, a tea ceremony and a traditional dance performance on the Sziget-kék playground. .
– From Korean pop music to Japanese comics and anime, Far Eastern culture is present in our everyday life in many different ways. Now there was a day when these threads came together strongly.
We also need these occasions, when – almost like a holiday – everything comes together, and it can be considered that a value is present, in this case the culture of the Far East in our lives – István Puskás, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen responsible for cultural affairs.
The Korean day was closed with a raffle, and in view of the great interest, they would like to organize a similar program in Debrecen next year, where lovers of Korean culture will also be welcomed.
