Always need more! – admit the two sportsmen from Debrecen
In addition to tabloids, sport played the main role in the only cat cafe in the town of Cívis on Friday evening. The guests of the discussion Trasparti a Macskávézó were Mária Kovácsné Fábián and Vilmos Köstner.
First, the most successful coach in the history of the DVSC sat down with the guest for an hour and relived how his career as a player and then as a coach began.
It turned out that he started with soccer and picked up the ball in high school – under the influence of István Ökrös, the coach of the legendary Dózsa Dózsa team in Debrecen.
– Back then, handball was completely different: I was still playing outdoors, on clay and bitumen, and the ball wasn’t as dirty as it is now. At that time, the 20 goals scored was considered very good – enlivened the specialist who also won the title of master coach in 2019, who started coaching at Ózd Kohász at the age of 24. – He worked with several men’s and women’s ensembles, but I was more successful with the latter.
Working with women is completely different, better for work, their work ethic and pain tolerance are much higher.
However, it is more difficult to compete with them, because if someone falls, it affects the others as well. Training a team rejuvenates a person a bit, but when he was older he might have wanted a task even more, which is why it takes much more energy, he indicated.
Vilmos Köstner sat on Loki’s bench four times, his most successful stage was the first. After taking over the red and whites from Ákos Komáromi in 1994, he won the EHF Cup with the team in 1995 and 1996. – Previously, we lost two finals with away goals, but then we won both.
After the success against Bakkelagets Oslo, a huge celebration started at the airport upon our return, from where we were taken to Tóthfalusi (today’s Dósa Palatine Square), and then the fiesta ended in Hódos.
A year later, against Larvik, there was not so much euphoria, even though in my eyes it was a more valuable success, since it is more difficult to defend something than to get it, he pointed out.
Of course, during the conversation, the four stages covering 275 matches were thoroughly explored, but the master coach’s other teams were also discussed. As Vilmos Köstner said, he fondly remembers all of them, he learned something everywhere that he was able to incorporate into the poetics of his coach’s ars.
A coach has to be born somewhere, you can learn a lot, but charisma and character are hidden in your genes, you either have them or you don’t.
If you don’t have the leadership skills, then the trainer will not be successful. But it is certainly enough in itself, because the most important thing is the background. To work successfully, you need a partner who understands and tolerates this life – emphasized the honorary president of the DVSC, who still goes to Hódos every day for at least an hour.
The second guest of the day was Mária Kovácsné Fábián, Debrecen’s first women’s deadlift champion and silver medalist of the Masters European Championship.
Marcsi, as almost everyone calls him, was a powerlifter and fitness competitor at first, and he achieved serious success in those as well. But after a while he became interested in weightlifting, so in 2018 he started training under the guidance of Zoltán Kecskés. Since then, Géza Pátrovics, the coach of the Kazincbarcika team, has been responsible for the preparation. They came quickly to the result, which is also marked by the championship title and the silver in the European Championship.
– This year’s European Masters in Poland was my greatest experience so far. At first, I had to concentrate mostly on not getting carried away by the atmosphere of the competition, everything was so wonderful.
I started in the 59 kg weight group, but I was so nervous that I weighed in at 55.5 kg.
In retrospect, I can smile about it, but then it really hurt that the result between 59 and 55 would have been worth gold… – said the athlete who works 11 hours a day in a drugstore in Debrecen, and who, despite this, has had a total of one training session in the last four years left out. He didn’t hide that if he knows in advance that he will weigh in at 55.5, then he will be entered in 55 from the start, but he also learned from this, and I hope that at the next continental competition, the National Anthem will be played for him as well.
At the end of the conversation, the excellent athlete told Haon that he has a cat at home, 1-year-old Elza, the favorite of the whole family. – When we leave home, the whole family worries about the kitten, wondering what it can do at home alone.
While the children were small, only golden hamsters were allowed in the house, but now that they are grown up, cats can come.
I was very happy with the invitation on Friday, it was an honor. I won’t deny, I was surprised, because I am small compared to Vilmos Köstner – said Mária Fábián Kovácsné, who is already preparing for the Ferenc Szabó memorial competition on October 29, where she wants to compete in 55 kg.
