Norway will soon start training Ukrainian soldiers in Great Britain
The need for training Ukrainian forces is extensive, Norway’s contribution will therefore be appreciated by both Ukraine and allies. During the donor conference for Ukraine in Copenhagen on August 11, Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp) confirmed that Norway will contribute to the training of Ukrainian soldiers in Great Britain. – Well, the Norwegian contribution is already in place in Great Britain to train Ukrainian soldiers. The Norwegian contribution is led by Chief Heimevernet, and the main part of the force contribution comes from the Army’s rapid reaction force in Brigade North, in addition to the command of Heimevernet, says Minister of Defense Bjørn Arild Gram.
Operation Interflex is a British initiative to contribute to force-building in Ukraine, through the training of Ukrainian soldiers in the “Armed Forces of Ukraine”. The training of Ukrainian soldiers in the UK has been carried out since June 2022. So far, more than 5000 Ukrainian soldiers have received training. Britain wants everyone to contribute to education. Norway, as one of several countries, has responded positively to this inquiry.
– Norway and Great Britain have a long and good tradition of defense cooperation. Together with several other allies, we have responded positively to helping to train Ukrainian forces in the UK. Norway will participate with instructors for basic soldier training. We follow a British training program which gives the Ukrainian soldiers a lot of knowledge during a limited period, says the Minister of Defence, who is today visiting Værne’s garrison together with Chief Heimevernet Major General Elisabeth Michelsen.
Russian warfare in Ukraine continues unabated. Ukraine will need significant military support from allies and Western countries in the future. The government will continue military support to Ukraine, mainly through donations of military materiel, procurement of military materiel and training of Ukrainian forces.
