Prague – With the meeting in Prague, the boss is sending a signal that Europe is Russia, EU diplomacy Josep Borrell said today. According to him, the goal is to further isolate Moscow, which is also supported by the eighth package of EU sanctions announced on Wednesday. However, the effects of the restrictions will not come overnight, Borrell told reporters.
“(Russian President Vladimir) Putin is not going to stop the war tomorrow because of the sanctions,” Borrell said. According to him, however, the Kremlin will feel, for example, the effects on the production of civil and military technologies. Sanction measures, which will be formally approved by member countries today, include the introduction of a price ceiling on Russian oil, a ban on the export of certain strategic technologies to Russia or the import of Russian products such as steel, wood or cigarettes.
“It does not mean that we want to isolate Russia forever, but we will not include this Russia. We are here to send signals,” Borrell told a meeting of European and EU leaders.
More than forty leaders will meet in Prague today for the first meeting of the European Political Community. In addition to the EU states, 17 other countries were invited, including Britain, Ukraine, Turkey and the Balkan and post-Soviet countries. On Friday, the meeting will be followed by an informal summit of 27 countries of the European Union.
