It’s the unmissable meeting place for lovers of black literature – just literature -, dark thrillers, devious investigations, elusive serial killers and fine sleuths. Like every year, Toulouse Polars of the South (TPS) will be full of captivating books, meetings, moments of conviviality with the most prominent authors of the moment, in an organization conducive to exchanges and a rare proximity.
Black Literature World Tour
sponsored by the Spanish novelist Rosa Montero, who notably published with Métailié the memorable “La folie du logis” and “La fille du cannibale”, as well as by
the excellent screenwriter, director and South African detective novelist Deon Meyer – author of “On the trail” or “The year of the lion”, published by Editions du Seuil – this 14e edition will be rich in prestigious guests. And we will travel far without leaving the marquee set up near the Renaissance bookshop: Europe, Africa and South America, Great Britain, North America. A veritable world tour of black literature is offered to us, interspersed with conferences, workshops culminating in distinctions, including the Violeta Negra and Mouth Prizes, among others.
47 writers will present and present their productions, delighted to sign an autograph and chat with the many lovers of detective literature.
our favorites
Our favorites are numerous: the American writer (though born in Scotland in 1963) Iain Levison will be present on Saturday and it would be a shame to miss this remarkable author, whose formidable novels, “Stop me there! (inspired by the Richard Ricci case, a taxi driver wrongly accused of the kidnapping of an American Mormon, Elizabeth Smartin 2002) or “Un petit boulot” have already been adapted for the cinema.
His lively and funny writing, his often hilarious characters and the narrative talent of Levison make his books delights to consume without moderation!
the brilliant Carlos Salema TPS regular (he hasn’t missed any since 2009!), author of the famous White Tiger series, will perhaps present the successor to “The Last Affair of Johnny Bourbon”, his unforgettable 2018 novel.
The formidable Toulouse armada
Thanks to them, the Pink City is turning red: Toulouse authors are in good shape and there will be many of them at the TPS. Pascal Dessaint recently published “So far so bad”satisfying collection of short stories, and “Vaucelles 1917” at NORD, a collection initiated by the Nord department.
Benoit Severac a writing, with sound “Painting by the Jewish Painter” (La Manufacture des livres editions), one of the most striking novels of this 2022 literary season. The investigation led by its narrator, Stéphane, for who was the Jewish painter whom his grandparents hid and helped during the ‘Occupation, we keep in suspense from the first to the last page. A masterpiece.
Bernard Minier, a heavyweight in detective literature, has had success after success and its “Lucia” (XO editions) is, once again, a very successful success. The state of grace continues.
With the Prix de l’Embouchure 2021
Nicolas Druartwho has lived in Toulouse for ten years, also accumulates bookstore successes and we find with pleasure the very sympathetic author of “L’enclave” and “Cinabre”, both published by Harper Collins editions.
