He will long remember his professional debut! Associated with the hinge his older brother Arthur, the opener of Toulouse, Edgar Retiere (21), experienced a dream premiere this Sunday, September 2, during the success of the Rouge et Noir in Montpellier (17-19), counting for the 5e day of the Top 14. A baptism of fire among the professionals which he savors all the more, because this one has been postponed, since the ex-international U20 (4 selections) was planned on the match sheet against Cardiff , last season, in the Champions Cup, before this meeting was canceled and lost on green carpet (0-28) due to cases of Covid-19 in the stadium ranks.
“Personally, I think I answered present”
Before being replaced at the hour mark by Thomas Ramos, the Burgundian Edgar Retière, trained in Nuits-Saint-Georges (Côte-d’Or), experienced a first encouraged by perfectly dictating the game of the Rouge et Noir: ” It was a big match, with a lot of intensity and rhythm. It was played on details, and in particular on a post, but we didn’t let go. We arrived with a young group and a little overhauled in Montpellier, but, casually, we proved that it was a whole group that had won today (Sunday, editor’s note). It was really a test for us and we responded present and I also think that I responded present in a personal capacity, ”welcomed the person concerned at the end of the meeting.
After playing the La Rochelle SuperSevens with the Toulouse squad this summer, Edgar Retière admits to having been “a little stressed” before making his debut in the Top 14: “It’s normal that there is a little pressure on the first balls, but from the moment the first impact left, I was launched! “, he said before thanking his partners for having put him in the best conditions:
I felt a lot of confidence from teammates and coaches. I was prepared all week to play this match and I’ve also been training with the team for 3 years, so I was ready to start.
“Being associated with the hinge with my brother is still incredible”
A first in the Top 14 that the young Nuiton is not ready to forget, since he had the chance to honor him alongside his older brother Arthur Retière (25), with whom he formed the hinge GGL Stadium. A “necessarily reassuring” presence for him: “We didn’t expect to play together so early, to be associated in 9 and 10, it’s still incredible. It helps, because we have automatisms and we know them perfectly. He just told me to do what I know how to do and just play. In the field, communication goes normally, as if we were in the garden!”
Humble and lucid, Edgar Retière is savoring his dream first among professionals and hopes that it will be followed by other match sheets this season. “When we taste these matches, we ask want to go back and show that we want even more. Afterwards, I don’t want to skip the stages and I will continue to work. I have to toughen up again and it will come when it comes…”
