Toulouse. Latino Graff’s open-air museum of urban art
More than 10 meters long and 5 high, from the dyke of the Garonne, at the crossroads of the Cross of Stone, you cannot miss this giant fresco.
It took Colombian artist La Negra (Angela Atuesta) three days of work to create this huge graffiti and cover the building’s old gray and sad wall.
“As long as someone carries the weight of our privilege, no one will be truly free”, is the message delivered by this politically engaged artist, whose works are the voice of Afro-Latin culture, feminism and popular struggles. .
“I wanted to symbolize the impact of industry on the environment, but also on the inequalities it has created between populations in underdeveloped countries”, explains Angela.
A multidisciplinary artist, she works in Bogotá and is the guest of the Guayabo Colectivo association in Toulouse, for its seventh itinerant Latino Graff urban art festival. Placed this year on the theme of Afro Latin culture, it offers all the artists involved the opportunity to strengthen their skill, outside their country of origin, on the graph that is produced in the Latin territory by the Afro people.
“This festival builds bridges between Latin America and Europe to allow artists to share their talent with each other and with citizens of the two continents”, explains Daniel Virguez, co-director of Guayabo Colectivo and the festival. “Our goal is to make art directly accessible to everyone by taking it out of galleries, and to give visibility to artists,” he adds. Note that Angela Atuesta, alias La Negra, is exhibiting solo at the Passerelle Negreneys des Minimes until November 11.
