Toulouse: a survey to better understand travel in the metropolis
A large household travel survey has been carried out since this summer and until March 2023 to better understand the travel habits of the inhabitants of the large Toulouse urban area. Results known at the end of 2023.
Do you travel mostly on foot, by bike, by car, by scooter or by public transport? Are these journeys mainly short (home to work, children’s school, etc.) or longer? What is their frequency? These are some of the questions associated with the major “household travel” survey asked by Tisséo Collectivités and the Occitanie Region, in partnership with the Departmental Council of Haute-Garonne and the State, will try to answer. This survey, which began in July 2022 and will run until March 2023, will make it possible to better understand travel needs in the Toulouse urban area and to better respond to them: organization of urban and interurban public transport networks, development cyclists and pedestrians, road traffic, parking management, etc.
“Adapt the means of transport to the needs”
“The aim of the survey is to provide a global and coherent view of all trips and to constitute a database on the trips made daily by the inhabitants of the urban area. It gives a precise and reliable image of the use of different means of transport (walking, cycling, public transport, motorized two-wheelers, car). This data allows us to adapt transport projects to the needs and expectations of our travellers,” says Jean-Michel Lattes, President of Tisséo Collectivités and Tisséo Ingénierie.
This survey, certified by Cerema (Center for Studies and Expertise on Risks, the Environment, Mobility and Planning), guarantor of a national methodology, will be conducted among 15,000 inhabitants selected at random from the 453 municipalities that make up the Toulouse urban area.
Anonymous questionnaire with 15,000 randomly selected residents
The last travel survey dates back to 2012-2013. Ten years have passed since then and many developments and changes have undoubtedly modified daily travel: developed cycle paths and development of teleworking linked to Covid, rising fuel prices, doubling of line A of the Toulouse metro, opening of Téléo. .. It is therefore essential to measure changes in mobility practices in this territory.
The survey is carried out at home or by telephone by the companies Test and Terre d’Appels Field. The first results will be available at the end of 2023.
The administered questionnaire aims to provide anonymous information on the household (composition, number and type of vehicles and bicycles owned), and the movements of each member of the family. It will make it possible to collect indicators of household equipment, individual mobility, from the different modes of travel, flows by area, etc.
